On July 23, 2018 a female dog named Valerie was adopted from a local shelter in California during the common practice of a "Clear The Shelter" event. Approximately 2 weeks later, Valerie was found abandoned on the side of the road dying from injuries that point to sexual assault. Simply put, someone adopted Valerie, (someone who lied on their adoption application) after which Valerie was beaten, tortured, and raped  before two people are suspected of dumping  her on a sidewalk leaving her to die a slow, and painful death.

The Orange County California Board of supervisors held a meeting this week to discuss a "Do Not Adopt List" in response to Valerie's ordeal. A Do Not Adopt List, or animal abuser registry, will assist shelters and rescues in weeding out persons with a history of violence toward animals bringing us one step closer to our goal of ending companion animal suffering. By signing this petition you are telling the Orange County Board of Supervisors that you want a Do Not Adopt List for our rescues and shelters. By signing this petition, you are telling them that you support a Do not Adopt List in this community. 

Many of you know how important an animal abuser registry is to me. We have all seen how many animals slip through the cracks like Valerie did. We can only blame ourselves if we don't fight to change the things that continue to allow this to happen. Today's laws are models for the future of companion animal welfare. Every State is starting to implement harsher penalties and even felony statutes for those who beat, starve, torture, maime, neglect and sexually assault companion animals. Combining the trend of strengthening companion animal welfare laws with a registry of persons who have been convicted of animal-related-crimes will help strengthen the power we have to prevent animal abusers from adopting companion animals from shelters and rescues thereby creating safer shelter and rescue organizations. One day it is my hope that we will have a national animal abusers registry to protect the animals we rescue. If we can begin here, in Orange County, we can set a precedent for the rest of California.
