What a whirlwind the past 48 hours have been, y'all. The school board meeting last night was a rollercoaster, but we are so incredibly proud that THREE Alpine Crest Elementary parents spoke to the board and Dr. Robertson in favor of the inclusive Mother's Day Lesson.
The Moms for Liberty were there and a few of them spoke (boo! hiss!), but we could feel the love and support in that room. And we know that the librarian, Mrs. Mickey, felt it too.
We want to continue to garner support for this petition (we plan to send it to the Superintendent as well as the board) AND show support for the Alpine Crest Elementary Librarian by voting her the TASL Librarian of the Month!
Please take a moment to VOTE NOW!
Here's the info:
Librarian Name: Caroline Mickey
Librarian's Email: mickey_c@hcde.org
Librarian's School: Alpine Crest Elementary
Librarian's School District: Hamilton County, TN
Job Title: Certified School Library Media Specialist
Region: East
Reason for nomination: (Please add your own thoughts here, but feel free to use our example as well) Mrs. Mickey is beloved by her students and community. She works hard to serve ALL of the students at ACE by choosing inclusive reading lessons. She also created a sensory-friendly space in the library for students who might get overwhelmed and need to take a break. Recently, Mrs. Mickey has been under fire by a hate group here in our county for offering a Mother's Day lesson to students (that parents were permitted to opt-out of) that featured books with non-traditional families. Unfortunately, the hate in our community was loud and the District chose to cancel the lesson. A community organization has created a petition that has garnered over 1,000 signatures asking the District to reinstate the lesson because of its importance. Mrs. Mickey deserves this honor because she is a wonderful human and educator and she needs the support right now. Thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to nominate her and for spreading this petition around. We appreciate your support and love for inclusive literature!
P.S. The ladies of "The View" agree with us! Watch it HERE.
