The proposed 1.7 mile Rea Road extension could have serious impacts to Weddington's environment, quality of life and public safety.
The proposed Rea Road extension project would traverse Weddington's Mundy's Run basin—an environmentally sensitive area featuring streams, wetlands, and wildlife—along Highway 84 (Weddington Road), requiring the acquisition of some homes through eminent domain.
The proposed Rea Road Extension project poses a significant threat to the Mundy's Run basin, potentially harming the area's wildlife habitat. This region is home to red-tailed hawks, ospreys, herons, deer, foxes, squirrels, and numerous other species. Notably, a federally protected pair of bald eagles is currently nesting with two newly hatched eaglets less than a mile from the project site. The area is also home to the soon-to-be endangered tricolored bats, further highlighting the ecological risks of this development.
The Rea Road extension project was originally proposed to save commuters 4.5 minutes of drive time. However, adding a four-lane highway extension that dumps out onto Highway 84 will only exacerbate traffic congestion near Weddington schools and increase traffic flow through Wesley Chapel into Monroe.
Light and noise pollution are also significant concerns, with large street lamps brightening the night sky and increased traffic from heavy-duty commercial trucks and cars contributing to the noise and congestion on Highway 84.
The construction of the four-lane highway extension through the Mundy's Run basin could result in stormwater runoff impacts for lower neighborhoods along Mundy's Run, including the Aero Plantation subdivision and its lakes.
We urge the Town of Weddington to require a comprehensive and up-to-date environmental study of the Mundy's Run basin area, including Deal Farm, which sits on Mundy's Run and is currently under a contingent contract with Toll Brothers.

Rea Road Extension Public Input
The NC Department of Transportation is proposing to extend Rea Road 1.7 miles east from Providence Road to existing Weddington Road near Twelve Mile Creek Road.
The proposed work also involves widening 2.7 miles of existing Weddington Road from two to four lanes from Twelve Mile Creek Road to Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road in Wesley Chapel.
In response to additional public and local government agency comments since the preferred alternative was presented in 2017 and an updated traffic study conducted for Weddington High School in 2023, design revisions were made to the preferred alternative.
