The current proposals for bear hunting in the state of Virginia (open season, archery and muzzleloader) are based on inadequate and potentially misleading information. The lack of reliable studies and statistics about the bear population mars the credibility of such suggestions. It is important to ensure that any measures taken do not inadvertently endanger the bear population, upsetting the ecological balance. There is an urgent need for decisions to be grounded in solid scientific research and reliable data. Therefore, we oppose the bear hunting proposals until accurate facts and statistics about the bear population in Virginia are made available. Conservation should be our priority.
