Oppose Unjust Relocation Demand on the CAFO in Melissa, Texas

The Issue

For years, a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) has held its ground in Melissa, Texas, participating actively in local commerce and contributing to our rural community's economy. However, as the city expands into our countryside, new residents are moving in closer and advocating for the undeserving displacement of our long-standing local business.

Educational institutions and residential neighborhoods are sprouting up, giving rise to demands that our beloved CAFO relocate. Without considering that the business has been functioning efficiently and diligently before this urban sprawl started infringing upon the country, it doesn't seem fair to shoulder the burden of displacement onto the CAFO.

Unfortunately, CAFOs are often subject to undue protests and calls for relocation due to misunderstood health and environmental concerns. According to the EPA, when managed correctly, CAFOs can co-exist with surrounding areas without posing a health risk (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). Furthermore, the American Farm Bureau Federation emphasizes that farming operations like these play a critical role in strengthening America's food security and supporting rural livelihoods.

This narrative fits us, the long-term residents, and the CAFO that has been a part of our community for years. We stand with our local business and assert that the city's progress must not trample on the rights and existence of established rural businesses.

Support us in reminding everyone that real, sustainable development respects and incorporates existing locales and business and call upon the city to reconsider its relocation demands. Stand with us by signing the petition against the unmerited relocation of the CAFO in Melissa, Texas.
