An Open Letter to Liana Kwan, DTM, Regional Advisor for Toastmasters International

My name is Terrence Ong Jun Han, and I have been a proud member of Toastmasters International since 2016. Over the years, I have learned a great deal and truly enjoyed my time with Toastmasters. However, I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the recent announcement of a dues increase and request that the headquarters board reconsider this decision.
When I was a university student, I struggled financially and could not afford to renew my membership. Fortunately, two generous DTM sponsored my continuation in the organization. I am deeply grateful for their support, and I believe that without their help, I would not be where I am today. I understand that the recent fee increase is due to COVID-19 and inflation; however, many members, including students and fresh graduates, face similar financial challenges. The dues increase may deprive them of the opportunity to learn and grow within this supportive environment, which goes against the core values of Toastmasters.
The sudden announcement of the fee increase, without any prior consultation or voting, has led to panic among clubs and members. University clubs and clubs with few members will be hit the hardest. Additionally, members with multiple club memberships might reduce their affiliations due to the increased cost. While raising the fees might increase revenue in the short term, it could result in a long-term negative impact on Toastmasters' membership and reputation.
Considering the global financial crisis, ongoing wars, political instability, and currency fluctuations, the 33% increase in dues poses a significant burden on many members. Yesterday, I started a petition against the dues increase, and it has already garnered more than 1,000 signatures from around the world, including Germany, India, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa. This growing discontent could impact Toastmasters' reputation if the issue is not addressed adequately.
Many members are questioning the organization's financial management due to the shift to online platforms, reduced printing costs, and increased revenue from selling pins and Pathways. I believe it is crucial for the International President to provide transparency regarding the organization's finances and clarify any misconceptions.
I would like to propose alternative solutions instead of the sudden 33% dues increase. These may include gradual increases over several years, subsidizing university clubs, offering discounts to multi-club members, or reviewing budgeting and expenses more thoroughly. As someone who has personally benefited from the generosity of others, I feel strongly about this issue and hope that you, as the Regional Advisor, can bring it to the attention of the leadership.

Sincerely,
Terrence Ong Jun Han
