The Issue

Tyler Rhodes is a name that still resonates with warmth and love in our community. He was a beloved track star at Albany High School, the trusted big brother, and the cherished only son of his parents. An unfortunate incident on the evening of April 30, 2011, ripped Tyler away from our lives. As part of an everyday routine, Tyler, only 17 at the time, was hanging out at Hoffman Park along with many others, a common gathering spot for our local youth, when he was purposefully stabbed by Jahlah Vanderhorst. The altercation was recorded by onlookers, and it be heard clearly and repeatedly by many saying "Jahlah stop" "Put the knife down". Jahlah Vanderhorst had the opportunity to listen to the large group of his peers, instead he knowingly and purposely stabbed Tyler ultimately causing his death.

Tyler's promising life cut short by such a horrifying act of violence left our community in shock and grief. His selfless character, leadership, and ambition were an inspiration to us all and represent a future that Vanderhorst stole from us. Vanderhorst must be made accountable for this heinous crime. It is therefore disconcerting to learn about Vanderhorst's plea for a Youthful Offender status and potential release.

We, as the loving and grieving community of Tyler Rhodes, stand in fervent opposition to this request by Jahlah Vanderhorst. Vanderhorst's actions and the pain it caused remains fresh in our memories. Granting him Youthful Offender Status and release would disregard the weight of his crime, the impact on Tyler's family, and our community's safety.

We ask the authorities to consider the severity of Vanderhorst's actions and deny his request for Youthful Offender status and release. We seek justice for Tyler and his family, but also for the mitigation of violence in our community, especially against its promising young people.

Affirm your contribution to maintaining justice and safety in our community by signing this petition. Let's ensure that Tyler's tragic death brings about the meaningful change it deserves. Sign now.
