The Issue

As residents and frequent visitors of the beautiful Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers, Ontario, we are deeply concerned about the proposed solar 'farm' spanning 500 acres of private land, including a pristine natural spring. This area has long been cherished by locals and visitors alike for its stunning farmlands, vibrant ecosystems, and as a source of pure drinking water from the natural spring.

The construction of a solar 'farm' in this area poses significant environmental and economic threats. The installation process and maintenance will involve extensive land clearing, resulting in the destruction of valuable farmland and wooded areas that are home to diverse wildlife and vital ecosystems. Pesticides typically used in such developments can easily run off into our waterways and wetlands, polluting water sources and endangering numerous species, disrupting the delicate balance of our ecosystem.

Electronic waste from solar panels and the presence of large batteries on the site bring further environmental risks. Battery acid leaks are foreseeable, and their presence would inevitably spoil the soil, rendering it infertile for any future agricultural use. This is not only an environmental concern but also a significant blow to the local community, known for its self-sufficiency and reliance on the land.

Additionally, the solar 'farm' will severely impact the aesthetic value of the landscape. The imposing infrastructure and industrial nature oppose the scenic beauty and historical significance of the area, which offers spiritual solace and a connection to the past, as well as probable areas where First Nations Communities once resided. The lack of consultations, thorough assessments and rigorous data gathering before proceeding with such a proposal only heightens our concerns.

We urge local authorities, stakeholders, and the wider community to reconsider this solar farm proposal. Instead, let's explore other ecologically-friendly opportunities that do not compromise our environment, heritage, and community well-being.

Please sign this petition to preserve the natural beauty and environmental integrity of Sables-Spanish Rivers, for ourselves and future generations.
