Oppose the single men shelter proposal at 41 Beekman street

The Issue

We are deeply concerned about the proposal to open a homeless shelter for 170 single men at 41 Beekman street.

While we understand and empathize with the need for more homeless shelters in our city, we believe that this particular location is not suited and poses several potential risks.

The proposed location is directly across the street from the Spruce Street School PS397, the local public elementary and middle school in the Financial District, Manhattan, New York, NY.

41 Beekman street is less than 250 ft from the school, just across the plaza where 450 children between ages 4 and 14 get dropped off and picked up every day. Neighborhood walks and activities are an integral part of the elementary and middle school curriculum.

Additionally, the proposed location is less than 500 ft from a dormitory building for Pace University, as well as multiple other school facilities, such as Pine Street School on William st. State law prohibits sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school, yet the shelter system cannot always screen its population thoroughly, and has failed to do so in recent episodes, including in our same neighborhood.

The proposed location also happens to be literally two doors away from FDNY Engine 6, as well as less than 500 ft from the ambulance entrance to the emergency room at NYPH. The coexistence of potentially mentally ill single men and emergency workers at such a short distance may be dangerous for both.

While it is crucial that homeless individuals receive support and shelter, it is equally important that such facilities are located appropriately. Schools and plazas should be safe spaces where children can focus on their education without worry or distraction.

We propose that city officials seek alternative locations for this shelter – places where they can provide necessary services without potentially compromising student safety, disrupting educational environments or endangering emergency services. Let us work together to find a solution which serves both our vulnerable populations and our children.
