Oppose the side hustle tax
Oppose the side hustle tax
The Issue
We use eBay, Vinted, gumtree, Depop and many other apps and sites to sell our belongings to gain some extra cash during these difficult times, with the rise in fuel, housing, food and general life costs.
The government are introducing a "side hustle tax" whereby these channels will have to declare what we, their users, earn year on year, and whether it exceeds the personal gross allowance of £1000.
Yet, if a belonging is of shared ownership, the Capital Gains Tax allowance covers up to £6000 and items with a lifespan of less than 50 years including cars and clocks, are CGT exempt.
We already pay tax on everything we purchase, why should we pay when we stop owning something? What if we're not selling at a profit due to used clothing for instance losing their value over time, but the amount exceeds £1000?
Without the safety of confidentiality of these vital selling channels, a lot of us would struggle to make ends meet, and we can't all be earning £30k+ a month that's required for a semi-decent way of life.
This petition is not to disagree with traders or creators having to pay tax for what they earn. This is a petition for the person who perhaps works full time, or part time, and struggles to make ends meet despite their wage or salary, cannot afford to re-train, cannot earn more than what they're currently earning, and needs to sell on what they already possess, which may exceed the tax allowance of £1000.
Side hustles are a vital way of life that we all rely on because the government are visibly taking and pocketing all our hard earned money. If we had a fair government, with fair costs, we would not need for a side hustle!
Action is immediately needed as energy costs are soon to rise again in the next month, and with the £1000 limit, a lot of us who are already going the extra mile to survive are going to suffer more.
