Oppose the Restrictive Cell Phone Policy at Jefferson Joint School District 251
The Issue
I am a student at Jefferson Joint School District 251, and everyday life has and will become challenging since the enforcement of the new phone policy. The new school regulations have put countless students, including myself, at a significant disadvantage. As someone who can't afford a standalone calculator, I heavily rely on my phone for a myriad of tasks. It serves not just as my calculator but also my primary communication device.
This policy has also hugely impacted club activities and sports, where timely updates are often essential. With the ban, many students like me are left scrambling to adapt in clubs which beforehand depended on immediate phone communication. Additionally, in a world where emergencies can arise at any time, our parents need to be able to communicate with us swiftly. My family is Spanish speaking, and as the primary English speaker in my household, I solely undertake the duty of handling the school's communication for both myself and my younger sibling. The new policy prevents that fluid communication, leaving a detrimental impact on family logistics.
More so, it's worth noting that the school's computers, suggested as a workaround, are unreliable and often slow, which compounds our challenges.
Students like myself should have every opportunity to succeed, and this policy inhibits that. We are in Rigby, ID, USA, and we need our voices to be heard. Therefore, we call upon the administrative officials of Jefferson Joint School District 251 to reconsider this policy, allowing students to achieve their full potential. Please lend your voice to our cause and sign this petition.
