Oppose the renaming of Cooper University Hospital
The Issue
Cooper University Hospital has been a cornerstone of healthcare and community service in Camden, New Jersey, for over 130 years. It has helped countless families, including mine, by providing excellent medical care with a dedication unmatched in the region. To us, it is not just a hospital — it's a vital part of our community’s history and identity.
The recent proposal to rename this respected institution to "Cooper Norcross" comes as a shock to many of us who have relied on its services and taken pride in its legacy. The hospital’s name carries a legacy of commitment to serving everyone in the community without discrimination and reminds us of the hardworking individuals who contributed their lives to make Cooper what it is today.
Naming such a historical hospital after a single political figure undermines the contributions of the medical professionals and staff who have dedicated themselves to its success and to the well-being of the local residents. Naming rights shouldn’t decrease the significance of the community at large. It’s about every nurse, doctor, and staff member who has worked tirelessly for the health and safety of our community.
Moreover, this proposed change does not reflect the views and sentiments of many in the region. We believe that our voice matters when it comes to something which impacts us this directly. Allowing political influence in the naming of a primary institution sets a concerning precedence that may prioritize the recognition of individuals over the service to the public.
We urge the decision-makers at Cooper University Healthcare to reconsider this proposal. Let us keep the focus on the hospital's mission of providing exceptional and inclusive health services, rather than shifting attention to political affiliations.
Join us in preserving the name of Cooper University Hospital—with its longstanding reputation for care, community, and compassion intact. By signing this petition, you help keep the hospital's name unchanged, ensuring that it remains representative of the institution’s true legacy and values.
