The Issue

This is a petition AGAINST the proposed Gracefield  Road to Vernon Avenue Walking and Cycling Scheme. This proposed scheme by the DCC will severely affect residents and traffic management on some of the already busier roads on the northside of the city.

The people directly affected are:

Homeowners on Gracefield Road, Brookwood Avenue, Vernon Avenue, Seafield Road

Why? A cycle lane will directly affect the below practically and aesthetically:

  • Access to and from their own properties on a daily basis, especially in the mornings on school runs & work commutes causing.
  • Limited or no parking facilities now outside of terraced houses, as cars will not be able to park near a cycle lane.
  • Cutting back of green verges outside houses, question over the cutting back of trees on existing roads, non environmental to existing environmental features.
  • Possibility of existing lighting poles and signage being relocated and  moving  nearer to houses.
  • Safety concerns as proposed roads etc gracefield road are already narrow and don't have the capacity to comfortably accommodate  for a cycle lane as well
  • Reduction of the space on existing roads to make way for a cycle lane.
  • There will be a reduction of speed limits on roads to make way for cycle lanes, cause more traffic to build up on these residential roads.

What is at stake?

  •  A permanent disruption to roads to account for the minority of the population - Current cyclists in the area account for under 10% of the road users.
  • Limited or no parking outside of St Anne's Park, directly affecting community events i.e. football matches, red stables markets, visits to park. Parking on the western side of the of the road will not be permitted. This was cause issues  for residents with more cars being parked outside residential homes.
  • The right turn pockets onto Brookwood Aveune and Sybill Hill road approaching the Howth Road will be removed, so there will only be one lane of traffic causing traffic tail backs and further ongoing traffic disruptions to the busiest roads.
