Oppose the Proposed Amendment to Kenya's Constitution to Extend Office terms of Executive

The Issue

Since 2024 began, Kenyan citizens, both young and old, have taken to the streets to express their great displeasure with how the current government has been running its affairs, which has left them in despair.

The current proposal to amend the Constitution by way of Senate Bill No. 46 of 2024, which attempts to Extend the Terms of the President, Members of Parliament, Members of the County Assembly, and the Creation of the Office of Prime Minister, is yet another endeavour to alienate the will of the people of Kenya.

The Government is supposed to PROTECT THE PEOPLE, SERVE THE PEOPLE and uphold the WILL OF THE PEOPLE.

WE, THE PEOPLE OF KENYA OPPOSE THIS BILL

1. The Constitution clearly defines the procedure to amend the Constitution by way of a referendum (Article 255(1)).

2. This bill highly infringes on the rights of citizens.

3. Extension of terms means delayed elections to replace under performing and corrupt elected leaders.

4. Extension of terms means the risk of prolonged incompetency and mismanagement

5. The establishment of the Office of Prime Minister will impose a significant financial burden on an already struggling economy.

THE CONSTITUTION OF KENYA was enacted to PROTECT the people. THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT has failed to adhere to the Constitution and only seeks to AMEND IT to serve those who are supposed to ENFORCE IT.

WE, THE PEOPLE OF KENYA PROPOSE:

1. STRICT ADHERENCE TO THE TERMS PROVIDED FOR IN THE CURRENT CONSTITUTION.

2.  FOCUS ON STRENGTHENING EXISTING INSTITUTIONS.

3. IMPROVED GOVERNANCE WITH THE PEOPLE'S WILL AS THE CENTER OF FOCUS.

4.  RESOURCES TO BE ALLOCATED TO ADDRESS THE PRESSING NEEDS OF THE CITIZENS.

5. THE CITIZENS' CONCERNS ON GOVERNANCE, WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEEN MADE CLEAR,TO BE ADDRESSED.
