Oppose the Proposed 50% Cut to Gainesville RTS Bus System Funding by University of Florida

The Issue

The University of Florida is planning a drastic cut in funding for the Gainesville Regional Transit System (RTS) bus service. This proposed 50% reduction will severely impact students' ability to commute to and around campus, making it difficult for them to access education and other essential services.

Public transportation plays a crucial role in our community, especially among students who rely on it daily. According to Gainesville RTS, UF students account for 60% of ridership and currently fund 50% of the RTS budget. These proposed cuts would severely limit the ability for RTS to continue with its current services, and has suggesting it would need to completely eliminate  many routes including the 118, 125, 122, 126, 127 and many others as well as limiting the number of buses on other important routes such as the 33, 20, 21, 38, 35, and others.

This proposed cut not only threatens accessibility but also undermines our commitment towards sustainable living and economic growth. We urge the University of Florida administration to reconsider this decision and maintain full funding for the RTS bus system.
