The recent unilateral increase in hostel rates across all Fiji National University (FNU) campuses has caused significant concern among students. This decision places an unprecedented financial strain on hundreds of us, particularly those studying at the Fiji School of Medicine and residing in Kivi/PCP, Hoodless, Pasifika, and McGregor hostels. For students in single-occupancy rooms at Pasifika, Hoodless, and McGregor campuses, the 57% rate hike is staggering and unjustified. This increase comes despite ongoing issues such as poorly maintained infrastructure, blocked showers, and clogged sinks—conditions that have not improved to match the elevated costs. As an institution dedicated to academic excellence and student welfare, FNU has a responsibility to prioritize the needs of its students. Instead of addressing these critical maintenance concerns, the university has opted to impose additional financial burdens, further hindering the student experience. Students deserve to live in safe, well-maintained accommodations without being subjected to unjustified financial pressures. Let’s stand together to ensure our voices are heard and demand that FNU takes action to uphold its commitment to student welfare.
