Petition Against 135 St. Clair Ave W - Zoning Amendment Application

Dear Toronto City Council,

I am writing to inform you about a petition launched on September 17th opposing the proposed 49-storey development at 135 St. Clair Avenue West.  In just three weeks, the petition has gathered over 1,162 signatures from concerned residents and community members who oppose this project.  Support for this petition continues to gain momentum.  You can view the online petition here: https://chng.it/zn5bLgpcYf .

An additional paper petition has also been circulated at the Bradgate Arms Retirement Residence, allowing residents without email access to add their signatures in support of the same cause.

Additionally, more than 200 people gathered yesterday evening at a rally on-site to voice their opposition.  Grassroots initiatives continue to energize this movement through social media, print, and radio media outlets.  We believe this issue deserves broader public attention, and we hope it reaches television news so all Ontarians can understand how their rights may be at risk under the current, flawed planning system.

On September 18th, during the Toronto and East York Community Council meeting, Councillor Josh Matlow made a motion to recommend approval of Fitzrovia’s application.  In that meeting, Mr. Matlow described the decision as difficult.  He further explained that, despite his opposition, if Toronto City Council does not approve the application, it will be approved by the Ontario Land Tribunal.

We believe that voting in favor of a project that harms the community contradicts democratic values.  It reflects a lack of courage and stands against the principles of responsible governance, especially when provincial authorities overstep their jurisdiction in a way that undermines local voice and community interests.

We strongly urge Toronto City Council to consider the community’s opposition and vote against Fitzrovia's application, which is currently on the agenda for the council meeting beginning tomorrow.  This proposed development raises serious concerns about density, infrastructure, and the preservation of our neighborhood’s character.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.  We trust you will prioritize the interests of your constituents and oppose this development.

Sincerely,

Michael Lindsay
