Oppose the Hilltops Council Draft Keeping of Domestic Animals Policy

Oppose the Hilltops Council Draft Keeping of Domestic Animals Policy

The issue

Hilltops Shire Council intends to implement a Keeping of Domestic Animals Policy.

The policy can be found here (Page 130 – 143): https://www.hilltops.nsw.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Public-Agenda-Hilltops-Council-24-May-2023.pdf

If implemented, this policy will restrict the animals kept on a property for domestic purposes, as companion animals, pets or as a hobby including but not limited to dogs, cats, poultry, birds, rabbits, sheep and horses.

The policy appears to have been drafted from an urban council policy and does not reflect our rural community values and way of life.

If this policy is implemented, Council will be obliged to enforce the policy which could result in fines or even seizure and impounding of animals.

This could also potentially lead to financial implications for rate payers and residents. To actively enforce the policy Council would need to hire additional personnel such as Rangers, as well as the residents facing possible fines, impounding fees, and application fees to request a variation to the policy on a case-by-case basis.

We as a community need to stand up and protect our rights and way of life that we are privileged to have by living in a rural area. We also need to protect the animals that could be detrimentally affected by this policy.

In addition to signing this petition, to really be heard and to make a difference you need to send a submission to council opposing the policy and requesting that the policy be abolished.
Council seeks submissions for the policy no later than 22nd June 2023.

Submissions can be made to General Manager
Hilltops Council
Locked Bag 5,
Young NSW, 2594

Submissions can also be made by email to: submissions@hilltops.nsw.gov.au

The data from this petition will be submitted to council and we will propose:

1. That Hilltops Council dismiss the Draft Keeping of Domestic Animals Policy.
