Oppose the gravel operation in Greenfield, NH
The Issue
A Proposal to allow a very large Gravel Operation will be likely coming before the town zoning and Planning Boards. The map above shows where this operation is proposed to take place. The amount of gravel to be removed is 750,000 cubic feet, which amounts to 37,500 trailer loads. The path these would travel is along Bennington road, through the center of Bennington, down Sawmill to the center of Greenfield in transit to Lowell Mass.
The extraction is expected to take 10 years.
The property in question is in the Residential zone. This is not a permitted use.
Our town is more than a place; it's a sanctuary for families, a habitat for wildlife.
Not only will this project affect all of the residents and destroy the quiet enjoyment of homes in what is supposed to be a rural area, it will also displace a lot of wildlife. Photos have been captured of bear, deer, fox, coyotes and bobcats, not to mention the many birds that inhabit the woods surrounding the property.
Gravel operations, known for their extensive noise pollution, will shatter the quiet atmosphere that defines Greenfield. The constant rumble of machinery and increased traffic from heavy trucks will not only disturb the peace but also pose safety risks on our rural roads.
Beyond the noise, the environmental impact is grave. Gravel extraction will lead to habitat destruction, and increased dust, which affects air quality. Studies have shown that such operations can significantly disrupt local ecosystems, affecting biodiversity and harming species that are often already vulnerable.
Furthermore, property values are at risk. Residents have invested not just money but dreams and hopes into their homes, expecting a serene, rural lifestyle. A gravel operation could lead to a decrease in property values, driving potential buyers away and impacting the financial well-being of our community.
There are viable alternatives and locations for such industrial activities that do not encroach upon residential districts or threaten natural habitats. Instead of approving the gravel operation in Greenfield, we urge officials to consider alternative sites that are more suitable for such industrial endeavors, preserving the character and environmental health of our beloved town.
We call on the authorities, from local government to environmental agencies, to prioritize the well-being of Greenfield’s residents and its ecosystem. We invite the community and every concerned individual to join our cause in safeguarding Greenfield’s tranquility and natural heritage.
Please, sign this petition to oppose the proposed gravel operation and protect the future of Greenfield, NH. Together, our voices can make a difference and preserve the integrity of our town for generations to come.
