Oppose the DNR's Deforestation Proposal for Michigan Solar Projects

The Issue

As a Michigan resident, I have always been taken by the beauty of our state's rich forests. They are a source of pride and joy, drawing people from all across the country to witness their breathtaking splendor. These green spaces do more than just provide aesthetic appeal; they are crucial for the state's ecology, reduce climate change, and house diverse wildlife species.

Recently, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has proposed a deforestation project to clear large areas in Michigan to lay the groundwork for solar panels. While I understand the importance of alternative energy sources, losing our remarkable forests is a price too high to pay for it.

Michigan State University has provided an excellent example of how solar energy can be harnessed without causing extensive environmental harm. They have installed solar panels over their parking lots, which are not only an innovative use of space but also minimize detrimental impact on our cherished natural surroundings. Surely, a feasibility study for this model can be undertaken on a broader scale to safeguard our forests.

The decision now lies in our hands. According to the Global Forest Watch, Michigan is home to 19.3 million hectares of forests. If deforestation proceeds, we stand to lose a significant portion of this. In turn, it will not only disrupt our state's beauty but also contribute to the global climate crisis.

Join me in preserving our state's natural heritage for generations to come and oppose the DNR's deforestation proposal. Sign this petition today.
