Christopher Shields started this petition to Town of Greenwich Planning and Zoning Commission

The Fourth Ward Historic District in downtown Greenwich was placed on the National Register of Historic Places through the efforts of the Greenwich Historical Society and residents of the neighborhood because of its association with events that made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history. This neighborhood was one of Greenwich’s most important 19th-century African American enclaves, as well as the nucleus of the town’s Irish population. It includes one of only two African American churches in town, and it was home to its first Roman Catholic Church.

The development proposed by Church Sherwood LLC, and scheduled to come before the Planning & Zoning Commission in March, requires the demolition of seven significant historic buildings in the district. The Greenwich Preservation Network, a group convened by the Historical Society and made up of the leadership of local organizations committed to the preservation of historic resources in Town, has voiced its opposition and created this petition.

Now, we need your help to oppose the unreasonable destruction of 39, 43 and 47 Church Street and 32 Sherwood Place because they are contributory and significant buildings located in the Fourth Ward National Register Historic District that have a significant street presence. Though not as visible from Church Street, 1, 2, and 3 Putnam Court should be preserved because they are contributory residential structures in the Fourth Ward Historic District.
