The Issue

Mr. Sherman, we LOVE the ROYALS and support a new stadium in Kansas!

But we, the local residents of Overland Park and Leawood, OPPOSE the Aspiria Campus location in suburban Overland Park...the antithesis of the Royals organization's stated goal of a downtown stadium. You surveyed season ticket holders, but we would like to make OUR voices heard, loud and clear, about why this is the WRONG location:

1. There are three high schools within 2 miles of the Aspiria campus, exposing our least experienced drivers, including 15 year olds with school/work/religious permits, to MLB stadium level traffic which will inevitably include impaired drivers.

2. There are three hospitals with emergency rooms within 2 miles of the Aspiria location. MLB stadium level traffic could literally cost the lives of our family members and loved ones.

3. Our suburban neighborhood homes back up directly to Nall Avenue on which the stadium would be located. We anticipate precipitous drops in our home values across Overland Park and Leawood, erasing lifelong equity building efforts. As well, we know that our neighborhoods will be impacted by fan parking, the accompanying crime and unacceptable noise levels.

4. We anticipate that some of our highest quality Kansas employers will leave the Aspiria campus, and likely the state of Kansas, replacing excellent jobs that fuel our community's quality of life and fight Kansas' brain drain problem, with low-paying, low skill jobs.

5. It will destroy the heart of the Johnson County Jewish community, economically devastating the Jewish Community Center, which was lovingly built over the last 38 years and is absolutely irreplaceable. With antisemitism on the rise nationwide, it will expose our Jewish community to strangers from all over the world, who may not have their best interests at heart, dredging up valid fears of a repeat of the 2014 fatal shootings by a former Klansman and Neo-Nazi sympathizer.

We urge you to LISTEN to the Overland Park and Leawood communities that would be irreparably harmed by the Royals pursuing the Aspiria Campus for its new stadium location.

Many House District 20 constituents have reached out to me with concerns about the potential for the Royals to build their new stadium in the heart of our district, at the Aspiria campus on the corner NW corner of 119th and Nall. My job is to help amplify your voices and make sure they get heard! Mark Kelly, President of Hawthorne Place Homeowners Association has graciously agreed to serve as my "Opposition Captain!" Please email him at MarkSimoneKelly@gmail.com to make sure you get updates and all of the latest information. We put together a Change.org petition summarizing the concerns we have heard from across the district: https://www.change.org/p/oppose-the-construction-of-a-royals-stadium-in-aspiria If you read the petition and agree with it, please sign on and share it with your neighbors. There are easy options to share it by email and various social media platforms. Mark will share it with John Sherman, Chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club, as the number of signatures reaches various benchmark numbers. It will also be sent automatically to numerous state and local decision-makers involved in the process. My next Town Hall is scheduled for December 6th at 9:00 am at the Oak Park Library.
