Oppose the closure of Cardiff East Park and Ride - Reference: 26/00109/HYB
The Issue
The Cardiff East Park and Ride at Pentwyn plays a crucial role for many of us at the University Hospital of Wales. As staff working in the Emergency Unit, we rely on this free and efficient transportation service to shuttle ourselves to and from work. But more than just convenience, this park and ride is a pillar of sustainable travel, significantly reducing the carbon footprint by limiting the need for individual car journeys for hundreds of individuals daily.
Currently, there's a planning application threatening to demolish this nearly 1000-space facility to pave the way for a data centre. While we understand the need for technological advancement and infrastructure development, it is imperative that a viable alternative is offered before dismantling a service of such critical value. The park and ride ensures not just accessibility for hospital staff, but also for patients and visitors. Its removal without a proper substitute will lead to increased traffic congestion and elevated pollution levels.
The environmental impact is not trivial. Reducing emissions and promoting sustainable travel options is a priority for our city's future and is deeply aligned with the objectives of the Green ED group (the Royal College of Emergency Medicine Sustainability Working Group) which we represent at the University Hospital of Wales. This is a necessity for reducing greenhouse gases and achieving long-term goals for cleaner air and better public health.
Rather than closing this essential facility, we request the authorities to either maintain the existing service or guarantee the provision of an equally effective alternative.
The path forward should not compromise on our sustainable transport commitments. It is critical to consider the broader impacts on our healthcare system's efficiency and the environment. We urge you to stand with us in advocating for practical solutions that prioritize both utility and sustainability.
