The Issue

We understand that student safety is important. However, many of us believe the clear backpack requirement places a financial burden on families, invades student and young women’s privacy, and generally lacks evidence of significantly improving school safety. The decision to implement this policy affects hundreds of students and their families in our district. Requiring them to bear the cost of these specialized backpacks, which are often more expensive and way less durable than regular backpacks. So basically there’d be a chance of having to buy more than one bag considering how undurable they are.

Furthermore, this policy does not guarantee a solution to the safety issues it aims to address. According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics, instances of school violence are complex and cannot be effectively stopped by a single policy change. The assumption that clear backpacks will prevent dangerous items from entering school grounds disregards other, more comprehensive safety measures that could be implemented. A clear backpack can make some items visible, but it doesn’t eliminate the safety risks. Dangerous items can still be concealed in clothing, binders, lunch boxes, and etc. If the goal is safety, I’d like the evidence of how it really helps us anyways.

Privacy is also a serious concern for the students. By requiring clear backpacks, students are forced to expose personal belongings, making them vulnerable to peer judgment and compromising their comfort in the school environment. Especially among the women of Kemp who have to keep personal hygiene products such as feminine products (Pads and Tampons) and even changes of underwear they may have to keep in their bag. Privacy is a right that should be respected and protected especially within young women. Particularly in educational settings where students are developing their personal identities. This could result to more problems and the loss of self confidence.

We ask the district to provide transparent evidence that supports the effectiveness of clear backpacks in enhancing student safety. Without such evidence, this policy appears to be a quick fix rather than a thoughtful solution to a complex problem. Instead, we urge the district to prioritize other areas that critically affect student well-being such as academic performance, teacher quality, and improving campus resources. Focusing on clear backpacks and not the type of education Kemp offers is a huge problem.

Addressing these issues would likely have a more meaningful and lasting impact on student success and safety. Schools with dedicated and well-supported teachers, a variety of resources, and a focus on academic excellence are known to cultivate safer and more productive learning environments. We believe that investing in these areas will better serve our students and community in the long run.

Join us in opposing the clear backpack requirement and advocating for policies that truly support student safety and well-being. Please sign this petition to urge the district to reconsider their decision and focus on more effective measures. Your voice is crucial in shaping a safe and supportive educational environment for all students.
