The Issue

Our tight-knit community on South Parade is facing a challenge that threatens to change the character and safety of our beloved neighborhood. A proposal to develop a 6 bed House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) within our residential street has been put forward, and as residents, we feel very strongly against it.

South Parade is known for its family-friendly environment, with children playing on the streets, neighbors knowing one another by name, and a predominately single-family home setting that provides stability and peace. We are deeply concerned that a 6 bed HMO will introduce a transient population, change the dynamics of our community, and potentially increase noise, parking difficulties, and other disturbances.

Statistics from neighborhoods with HMOs show an uptick in complaints regarding noise and anti-social behavior. Our community conducts annual events, such as street parties and neighborhood watch meetings, which rely on the commitment and involvement of long-term residents. Introducing a property of this kind undermines the essence of what South Parade stands for – unity, safety, and cooperation among neighbors.

Furthermore, the infrastructure of our street is not designed to support an increased number of vehicles or the heightened foot traffic that accompanies such developments. This not only poses safety risks but also affects the quality of life for current residents. We have limited parking spaces that are already at capacity and cannot accommodate more vehicles without causing inconvenience and potential hazards.

We propose that if new housing is to be developed, it should align with the existing characteristics of our community, supporting family units or other suitable resident-centric developments. We call upon the local planning authorities to carefully consider the impact of granting permission for this 6 bed HMO and to prioritize developments that preserve the integrity and safety of residential streets.

Please help us keep South Parade the safe, pleasant community it has always been by signing this petition. Your support is critical in voicing our concerns and convincing decision-makers to reject this proposal. Together, we can ensure that the interests of committed, long-term residents take precedence in our beloved neighborhood. Sign now to make a difference!
