The Issue

Thank you for taking the time to read about this petition. Tennessee politics have frequented the recent news cycle, with the topic of marriage being no exception. House Bill 878, as amended, provides: "A person shall not be required to solemnize a marriage." This petition OPPOSES this legislation.

This bill invites problems rather than addresses them. When presenting the HB 0878 in a legislative session on March 9, 2023, Representative Monty Fritts (R-Kingston) was UNABLE to provide a single example of someone being forced to solemnize a marriage. When questioned why the legislature is using constituents' tax dollars to pursue this agenda without a practical issue regarding the solemnization process, viewers and listeners of the legislative session were left with no answers. It is clear that the intent is to send a non-inclusive message with catastrophic potential. This legislation provides discretion to limit the rights of gender minorities, racial minorities, or members of the LGBTQ+ community. This is a human rights issue that demands immediate attention.

Tennessee conservative leaders have consistently prioritized economic growth. This legislation opposes their exact agenda by alienating an entire sector of the population who feels attacked or undermined by this proposal. Including all in economic activity is a POSITIVE thing for our state.

Please sign this petition to express your opposition to this legislation as we continue to work in our lobbying efforts against its progression, and please share this with anyone you can!
