The Issue

Living in close proximity to Martens Park in Abbotsford, BC, with my two young children, I am deeply concerned about the proposed development to transform this cherished green space into a 42-unit temporary housing facility. As a community, we have enjoyed this park for decades. It is more than just a park—it is a safe haven for students, children, the elderly, and all members of our community.

The property, although owned by the province, has been maintained by the city as a park and serves as an essential recreational and social gathering place for us all. However, the proposed development would replace this vibrant community hub with a project that allows drug consumption and could potentially compromise the safety and wellbeing of our community. The proximity of this project to a local school and playground amplifies these concerns, as we worry about safety implications for our most vulnerable, including children and the elderly.

Why transform a community park into a facility that could disrupt the harmony and safety of our neighborhood? The fear of increased crime and drug-related incidents, especially with individuals potentially wandering into areas where children play, is a real concern shared by many parents like me. We need to prioritize creating safe environments for our children to learn and play.

This petition calls on all Abbotsford residents, local authorities, and provincial decision-makers to reconsider this proposal and explore alternative locations away from schools and playgrounds for such housing projects. We envision a balanced plan that caters to both the needs of housing and community safety.

Let's work together to preserve Martens Park as a safe, clean, and green space that continues to foster community wellbeing and environmental sustainability. Sign this petition to protect our community's beloved park and ensure the safety and integrity of our neighborhood for future generations.
