The Issue

The passing of Arkansas bill SB433 threatens the freedom of religion and inclusivity that we hold dear in our educational institutions. The bill is designed to mandate the placement of the Ten Commandments in public schools, thereby endorsing a specific faith as a state-sponsored religion, a clear violation of the First Amendment's Establishment Clause.

Furthermore, this legislation fails to present any balance as it doesn't include any scriptures from other religions to be shown in schools. In neglecting this, we are shunning the cultural, religious, and language diversity of our student population. Many students speak languages other than English - an identity that is disregarded by the insistence on displaying phrases like 'In God We Trust' without offering translations.

Against the very essence of First Amendment, equality and inclusivity, this bill aims at endorsing and teaching Christianity in the belief that it fits all, thus undermining the diversity we cherish. The imposition of a particular set of religious beliefs is not simply an infringement of personal freedoms, but also neglects the rich tapestry of our multicultural society.

The traditions and teachings that unite us must not be the things that set us apart. It is for this reason that we must oppose Arkansas bill SB433. Do not sit aside while our freedoms are compromised, attach your signature to this petition and stand on the right side of history.
