Oppose Sainsbury’s and Stop The Replacement of People by Machines

The Issue

My name is Reon, I am disabled and a supporter of disability rights I have ADHD I have started this petition having been inspired by Pat Mccarthy who campaigned the same reasons with Tesco stores.

As many of you are probably aware Sainsbury’s now have increased the number of Self-Service-Tills in stores but let’s be honest this is slowly killing the shopping experience as I speak.

What was once a happy shopping experience for me has now turned into a stress inducing nightmare that's never ending.

At my local Sainsbury’s and across the nation the company has reduced the number of self-service tills which as of 2022 now make up two thirds of tills in stores

I will admit more machines are taking over human jobs and putting a strain on people who enjoyed human interaction it can affect those with little confidence at all to use the machines like myself.

Many people especially the elderly and disabled with mobility, dexterity and lifting issues are most likely unable to use Self-Service even i will also admit even if you do have a card or cash it is still a problem for many and if they don’t use self service then they have to queue for up to at least thirty minutes to get a staffed till open the numbers can rise higher during peak times though some tills are not opened at all.

Staff hours have now also been cut due to this resulting in former till staff being assigned to different departmental roles now.

I’ve always enjoyed chatting with staff at the tills but now this has sadly been taken away from me, I do always find interaction in the workplace is still vital for many including myself.

With more machines taking away human interaction many people can struggle with it when paying for their shopping because most people who can not get a manned till open with a big trolley full of shopping have to then place their food onto a small item area then proceed to scan it (if the scanner even works properly) then once again proceed to place your food in the item area, then move it to the bagging area (I will note that the bag packing area is also to small for a large trolley shop) proceed to pay for it then proceed to load back in to your trolley. It is a physical taxation process. I have seen with my own eyes many old and disabled people struggle to lift heavy items out the bagging area yes staff can help but you can clearly see they want to be served by a person.

I ask that Simon Roberts the Chief Executive (CEO) of Sainsbury’s and his team bring back a number manned tills to stores and make a pledge to commit to people before profit instead of filling his pockets full of money.
