The Issue

The recent proposal by the Saint Albans City Council to ban roosters within city limits threatens not only our local culture but also the rights of small urban farmers and backyard poultry enthusiasts. While the noise created by roosters can be a concern for some, singling them out is neither fair nor effective.

In our community, we coexist with various other noise elements such as two-stepping cars, loud mototcycles, and constant barking dogs - more disruptive than a crowing rooster. Targeting roosters unfairly labels them as the primary noise issue, ignoring the broader soundscape of urban life. Moreover, keeping roosters can be essential for those interested in sustainable agriculture, contributing to hen fertility and helping maintain healthy backyard flocks.

We urge the City Council to reconsider this ordinance and work towards a balanced approach that values the diversity of our local community. Banning roosters outright seems drastic compared to fostering dialogues and solutions that take everyone's interests into account.

Sign this petition to protect the rights of Saint Albans City residents to keep roosters responsibly and sustainably. Let's ensure our city supports diversity, agriculture, and community spirit.
