The Issue

I am a home and property owner residing on Allen Rd, having been born and raised in this predominantly Black community. After living away for several years, I returned with my family, eager for my children to experience the love and support of the tight-knit community in which I was raised. This is truly a village of hardworking individuals, supported by community leaders and local churches, who have curated a nurturing environment that we are proud to call home.

Recently, there has been a proposal to change  a section of Hwy 19 and Allen Road from “Agricultural Residential”  to Commercial, specifically to build a convenience store and gas station. This plan threatens to disrupt the harmony and integrity of our community. The rezoning would not only change the landscape but could also lead to increased traffic, noise, pollution, and safety concerns in an area populated by retirees, families and children.

Moreover, the establishment of a convenience store/gas station could lead to undesirable changes in our community dynamics, such as increased litter, crime, and the loss of the serene neighborhood that so many of us cherish. The planned commercialization is not aligned with the values or needs of our residents, who appreciate the peaceful, rural character of Salem, Upson County.

We understand the need for development and economic growth, but not at the expense of losing the core identity and safety of our community. There are alternative zones better suited for commercial projects without compromising residential areas designed to support family life and community values.

I would like to further note  the Auchumpkee Covered Bridge, a Historic  site, is also located on Allen Rd. A quiet place where you can sit and listen to the water or take breath taking photos surrounded by natures beauty.

We urge the Upson County zoning authorities to consider the impact on local residents and our quality of life. Let us preserve the idyllic nature of our home and explore development strategies that align with, rather than disrupt, our community's longstanding traditions and cohesion.

Sign this petition to oppose the rezoning of Hwy 19 and Allen to protect the integrity of our beloved Salem community.
