Toronto city council will again consider the previously rejected idea of renaming the stadium at Centennial Park ‘Rob Ford Stadium’ in honour of the late former mayor.

The item, which will be considered by council at its upcoming meeting on Wednesday, was put forward by councillor Paul Ainslie and seconded by councillor Shelley Carroll.

We have already seen how problematic it is to name institutions, structures and streets after people so we are calling on Toronto Council to REJECT this motion. Rob Ford was a harmful and problematic councillor and mayor. In addition to his record of sexism, misogyny, homophobia and racism, Ford’s policies held back the city of Toronto and created massive debt.  

His cancellation of the approved Transit City alone, cost $65 Million and stalled a desperately needed improvement in public transit.  

He consistently lied to tax payers* and made Toronto a global mockery.  

This motion was already voted down at council by the very councillors who are suddenly putting it forward which calls into question the true motivation for this political move. 

As residents of the City of Toronto we implore council to once again reject this motion and leave this harmful former mayor’s name off our institutions.
