PETITION TO OPPOSE PERMANENT STADIUM LIGHTING AT THE BRONXVILLE SCHOOL

We, the undersigned residents of Bronxville, respectfully oppose the
installation of permanent stadium lighting on Chambers and Hayes Fields at the
Bronxville School.

This installation of Stadium Lights at the Bronxville School has been raised three times over the past two decades –first in 2005, again in 2013-2014, and now once more in 2025. On both prior occasions, after extensive community feedback and over 500 signatures opposing the plan, the Board rightly decided that lighting was not appropriate for our small residential village. The reasons for those decisions remain equally, if not more, compelling today. Since stadium lights were last considered in 2013-14, the turfing of Hayes Field significantly increased available field time, while student enrollment at the Bronxville School has decreased.

Some of Our Concerns

1. LIGHT POLLUTION AND UNSIGHTLY STRUCTURES
The installation of 70-80 foot light towers in the heart of our village would
permanently alter Bronxville’s landscape and transform our school’s athletic fields
into Times Square. The intrusive glow of the lights would envelop the center of
our village, not only impacting nearby homes, but also compromising the small-
town charm that has always distinguished our community.

2. NOISE, TRAFFIC AND SAFETY
Field use after dark would bring noise, crowds, garbage, parking shortages and
traffic congestion, disrupting the nighttime peace and quiet we all value, while
raising security and maintenance demands.

3. HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
Numerous studies have shown that prolonged nighttime exposure to artificial light
disrupts circadian rhythms, lowers melatonin levels, and increases risks of
cancer, as well as contributing to sleep disturbances, depression, obesity and
diabetes. We believe stadium lights would needlessly exacerbate these health
risks for children who use the fields under the lights and for any other community
members who live in the densely populated area surrounding the fields.

4. COMMUNITY CHARACTER
Bronxville’s identity is inextricably tied to its small scale, shared spaces,
neighborly atmosphere and tranquility. Permanent stadium lighting and all the
nuisances that come along with it, will erode the character and the unique sense
of place that has defined Bronxville for generations.

OUR POSITION

We wholeheartedly support Bronxville student athletes and understand that scheduling
field time can sometimes be challenging. While lighting the fields in the center of the
village may seem like an expedient way to provide more field time, doing so would
irreparably damage the quality of life of every member of the Bronxville community.

We urge the Board of Education to:

  • Reject the proposal for permanent lighting; and
  • Explore alternative solutions that are consistent with preserving the character of
our village and the quality of life of our community.
