My life was forever altered when my husband Michael Schmitt was shot in between the eyes and killed by the defender Mathew Reeves on July 15, 2021 . Mathew Reeves is currently only serving a 9 year sentence. Isn’t that an already short prison term? The possibility of parole looms over us, (This March 19, 2024 ) threatening to undermine that justice that has been served. He hasn’t even spent 3 years,and goes up for parole March 2024. That’s not even long enough for the grass to grow back up on the grave.  Let alone long enough for Mathew Reeves to be rehabilitated. It is a constant reminder that our legal system sometimes fails to hold criminals fully accountable for their actions.

In recent years, there have been numerous changes in laws pertaining to parole eligibility and sentence reductions. While these changes aim at rehabilitation and reducing prison overcrowding, they often overlook victims' rights and societal safety. According to a report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), about 68% of released prisoners were arrested within three years, 79% within six years, and 83% within nine years.

This petition seeks to ensure that prisoners are held accountable for their crimes regardless of any future changes in law. We must prioritize justice for victims like myself, Mikey’s family, and our son who live with the aftermath every day while ensuring public safety from repeat offenders. Our community is frightened.
