Oppose parole for Clinton Dickens

The Issue

On September 1, 1986, two vibrant young lives were violently taken away in Akron, Ohio.

Clinton Dickens, then just 17 ½ years old, in conjunction with an accomplice, committed a heinous crime that left deep scars on our community and forever altered the lives of the families involved.

Dawn McCreery, aged 20, and Wendy Offredo, just 21, had finished their waitressing shifts and were heading to an inn, unaware of the ominous fate that awaited them.

When they encountered Dickens and his accomplice, who had been recklessly throwing concrete chunks over a bypass,  hitting the car Wendy was driving forcing her to pull over.   What followed was an unthinkable sequence of events.

Dawn and Wendy  were kidnapped by Dickens and his accomplice then robbed, raped, and brutally murdered by strangulation.

The accomplice was sentenced to death and executed for the murders.

Dickens was convicted of first-degree murder and was sentenced to Life with parole after 95 years.

However, SB 256 has reduced his sentence by two-thirds and made him eligible for parole after 30 years.  He will have served only 40 years when he is considered for parole.

Now, as the possibility of parole looms for Dickens, we are reminded of the deep wounds that still haven't healed. Parole would not only undermine the severity of these crimes but also dismiss the perpetual grief and sense of injustice felt by the victims' families and the community at large.

Parole for Clinton Dickens is not about forgiveness or rehabilitation; it disregards the profound loss suffered by Dawn and Wendy's families. These young women had dreams, hopes, and futures that were stolen from them.

For justice to truly prevail, Dickens must serve his full sentence, reflecting the gravity of his actions and honoring the lives he extinguished.

We urge the parole board to weigh the consequences of their decision heavily, to recognize the irreplaceable loss endured by the families, and to maintain the integrity of the justice system by keeping Clinton Dickens in prison.

The memories of Dawn McCreery and Wendy Offredo demand justice that endures as steadfastly as the pain of their absence.

Stand with us in affirming that justice for Dawn and Wendy means ensuring that Clinton Dickens serves his full sentence. Sign this petition to help prevent parole for a perpetrator of such egregious crimes.
