Update from the City of Longwood

My name is Jason, and I’m part of the Civic Engagement Team at Change.org. Our mission is to connect petition supporters with decision makers and help foster healthy civic engagement in our communities. I wanted to share a brief update on this petition, including where things stand and what we’ve learned recently.

We received an update from the City of Longwood about the proposed non-ad valorem solid waste assessment. The City shared several upcoming opportunities for residents to learn more about the proposal and make their views part of the official record ahead of the City Commission’s September 10 consideration.

The City Commission is scheduled to consider this matter on September 10, 2026, shortly after 6:00 PM. The meeting will be held at:

The City has been compiling written/emailed comments received regarding the proposed assessment and including them with the agenda materials for the City Commission to review. I will include your email and the information regarding the petition and its reported 100+ signatures with the materials provided to the Commission.

Residents who would like their individual comments included in the City’s record are encouraged to submit them directly to clerk@longwoodfl.org prior to the September 10 meeting. Residents are also welcome to attend the meeting and speak during the public hearing. Each speaker will have three minutes to address the Commission.

Additionally, the City Manager & Finance Director will be holding a Q&A Meeting for the public to understand the proposed Solid Waste Assessment on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at 6:00 PM in the Longwood City Commission Chambers at the same address listed above. I have attached the flyer with additional information and encourage you to share it with the petition signers.

For those who are unable to attend the September 10, 2026 City Commission Meeting, submitting their comments by email will ensure that their written opposition or support is received directly by the City and included with the appropriate meeting materials.

Once the September 10 meeting has concluded, we would be happy to provide you with the action taken by the City Commission so that you may share the outcome with those who participated through Change.org.

For supporters, the next several days are an important point in the process. The September 3 Q&A provides an opportunity to learn more about the proposal, while the September 10 public hearing is when the City Commission is expected to consider the matter. Residents who want their views included in the official record can also email the City Clerk before the meeting.

The City has also said it will share the Commission’s action after the September 10 meeting, so we hope to provide another update once a decision has been made.
