Oppose motorized vehicles on Gimli Rail Trail

Oppose motorized vehicles on Gimli Rail Trail
The Issue
The Gimli Rail Trail is more than just a path; it is a cherished active transportation nature corridor that holds a special place in the hearts of our community. Gifted to the RM of Gimli in 2004 by the Trans Canada Trail, this trail was intended to provide a tranquil, safe, and environmentally friendly route for pedestrians, cyclists, and other active transportation travelers. The legally binding Gifting Agreement explicitly requires the trail to remain dedicated to active transportation, allowing snowmobiles only during the winter months.
However, the RM of Gimli is currently working on a Trails Master Plan, which includes proposals to introduce Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) onto the Gimli Rail Trail. This development goes against the initial agreement and poses significant threats to the safety of trail users, the environment, and quality of life of trail users and neighbouring residents. Introducing motorized vehicles onto a trail designed for peaceful and sustainable use contradicts the ethos of active transportation and endangers the harmonious balance between nature and recreation.
The Gimli Rail Trail is a gem in the community. Allowing ORVs would not only breach the terms of the original gifting agreement but also set a precedent that undermines the trust and expectations of the RM of Gimli residents. Noise, pollution, and safety hazards introduced by motorized vehicles threaten to tarnish the trail's serene landscape and disrupt the community's enjoyment.
We must insist that the RM of Gimli honour the Gifting Agreement with the Trans Canada Trail. This means maintaining the trail's status as an active transportation corridor, respecting its historical and ecological significance, and protecting the integrity of its purpose. Let us unite in safeguarding our trail for current and future generations who seek solace, connection to nature, and a space for healthy, active living.
We call on everyone who values this vital community resource to stand with us in opposition to the introduction of ORVs on the Rail Trail. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to preserving the Gimli Rail Trail as a bastion of environmental stewardship and community wellbeing. We urge the RM of Gimli to listen to their residents, landowners, and taxpayers, acknowledging the profound impact this decision holds over our shared environment and tradition. Please sign this petition to keep the Gimli Rail Trail motor-free and uphold the integrity of our treasured community asset.
