Oppose Mining Activities of any form in Catanduanes
The Issue
Catanduanes is a small island province in the Bicol Region, Philippines with an area of approximately 151,100 hectares about 70% of which is forestal. It has been declared as Mining Free province by virtue of Provincial Ordinance #006 s. 2013 which was strengthened by Republic Act No. 11038 otherwise known as Integrated Protected Areas System of 2018.
On October 12, 2023 however, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Catanduanes has enacted Provincial Ordinance #025-23 temporarily suspending the implementation of Provincial Ordinance #006-13 and allowed the operation of Small Scale Coal Mining from October 2023 to October 2024. We vehemently oppose this action by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Catanduanes because of the fragile condition of the province which will put the entire island in immense danger. Thus this petition.
