Oppose Landfill in Kailua
The Issue
Petition Supports: You do NOT need to donate to sign this petition. This money donation goes to change.org and your donations amplify advertising. We have done very well with signatures and the Mayor announced yesterday that another location was selected and will be pursued. Please do NOT feel obligated to donate-that money is NOT coming to Hawaii, to Kailua or to the MES `Ohana PTO (parent teacher organization at Maunawili Elementary School in Kailua, HI.)
Mayor Blangiardi and the Honolulu City Council,
We are members of the Maunawili Elementary School community and we strongly oppose having a landfill at the possible proposed location of “the area currently utilized by the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility and Olomana School”.
That property is directly NEXT to our elementary school in Kailua and is an unacceptable location for a landfill.
We have 359 students who are growing as students within our classrooms and moving their bodies outdoors in the attached park. We have 65 employees who are committed to laying the foundation for success for these students. Heavy truck traffic, garbage flying about, and constant noise would significantly impact the success of our students and educators. Added to that, gasses like methane and other odors from a landfill near our school will contaminate the air quality which will impact the learning that should take place at school.
Our school has been very successful and brought great honor to our state as one of only two schools statewide to earn a Blue Ribbon designation from the United States Department of Education in 2023. We are committed to excellence and a landfill adjacent to our school is unacceptable. It is paramount to protect our students, faculty, staff, and school community.
Kalanianaole Highway is a major artery for community members who commute, students and educators, even people seeking critical care at Castle Hospital. Our families already experience major backups on Kalanianaole trying to access school. Additional commercial traffic would add another layer of danger for our students to access school safely. This landfill would overwhelm the infrastructure at critical times of day as trucks leave and return from their routes.
We urge and humbly request you to please remove this location from consideration.
