I am a resident of Harrison County, and I am deeply concerned about the proposed housing development on West Wortham Road, Saucier, Harrison County, Mississippi . This development is not aligned with the Harrison County Comprehensive Plan and the Smart Growth Code, as it aims to place an urban population adjacent to a rural agricultural area. This drastic change endangers not only the rural lifestyle we cherish but also the safety and environmental health of our community.

One of the most pressing issues with this proposal is the increased risk of flooding and water contamination it introduces. The development would alter the natural landscape significantly, leading to runoffs that could contaminate our water supplies and exacerbate flooding incidents. These risks are especially concerning in light of the recent climate events that have made our area more vulnerable to such threats.

Additionally, the increased housing density per acre is not congruent with the standard growth codes that have been set to preserve our community's character and sustainability. The proposal threatens the lands biodiversity and local ecosystem. This development would alter natural flood barriers and natural water filtration systems, and their destruction would have long-standing adverse effects on our environment and quality of life.

There is also the vital concern regarding the delay in emergency services. With increased population density, first responders might face challenges in reaching affected areas promptly, potentially putting lives at risk during critical moments.  West Wortham Road is already filled with traffic causing delays and safety issues with the West Wortham Elementary and Middle School.  

We believe that any development should be carefully planned for safety of our citizens and should respect the existing guidelines and comprehensive plans that aim to balance growth with the preservation of our community’s integrity and safety.
