Oppose hot-mix asphalt facility in Collierville
The Issue
Last week, I was unexpectedly notified about the Town of Collierville's consideration to grant a conditional use permit for a hot-mix asphalt facility at the intersection of Progress Road and Keough Road. This measure, identified as Case #261907, comes with concerns that have deeply troubled me, both as a resident and a member of our local community. Slated for discussion on Monday, September 28th, 2026, this proposal requires our immediate attention and action.
The proposed site, encompassing approximately 35 acres, poses significant risks to the health and safety of our residents. Among the potential hazards associated with hot-mix asphalt plants are air and noise pollution. According to studies conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), such facilities emit harmful pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide. These compounds are known to aggravate respiratory issues, contribute to smog formation, and degrade overall air quality.
Furthermore, the location's proximity to residential areas, schools, and local businesses raises serious concerns about the immediate impact on our children's health and our community's environment. Noise pollution, too, is an inevitable consequence, affecting our daily lives and reducing the tranquility and quality of life we so cherish in Collierville.
Beyond personal health and safety worries, property values in surrounding neighborhoods may suffer as a result of the plant's presence. Real estate studies often highlight a downturn in property prices near industrial sites due to increased pollution and reduced attractiveness of the locale.
It's crucial that we stand together and voice our opposition to this proposal during the town's meeting. Make your presence felt, share your thoughts, and help safeguard the future of Collierville by ensuring that decisions made today don't compromise our health tomorrow.
Please join me in urging the Town of Collierville to reject the the conditional use permit for the hot-mix asphalt facility at the Board of Mayor and Alderman public hearing, Monday, September 28th, 2026 at 6pm located in the James H. Lewellen Board Chambers at Town Hall, 500 Poplar View Parkway, Collierville, TN 38017 to express your concerns.
