The Issue

Staying connected with our incarcerated loved ones should not be an opportunity for corporate greed. It is an essential component for maintaining their mental health and providing much-needed emotional support during difficult times. Unfortunately, the proposed hike in Securus phone call rates threatens to treat this vital lifeline as a luxury, not a necessity.

The cost of maintaining this crucial communication line is intended to more than double, creating an insurmountable barrier for countless families across Missouri. Securus Technologies, one of the largest providers of prison phone services, is planning a significant increase in call rates. Such a move disproportionately impacts families who are already struggling financially due to the incarceration of a family member. Studies have shown that regular communication with family significantly reduces recidivism rates and aids in the successful reintegration of individuals into society post-incarceration (Corrections Today, 2021).

Exorbitant call costs only serve to further alienate and punish families, when what is truly needed is affordability and accessibility. Access to communication should never hinge on one's financial status. It is not merely a service, but a bridge that offers hope, love, and support.

We call upon the Missouri state legislature to intervene and prevent the proposed rate increase by Securus Technologies. Instead of fostering an environment where profits come at the expense of human connection, policies should be implemented that prioritize the well-being of inmates and their families.

Let's urge local policymakers to review and regulate the pricing structures of prison telecom services, ensuring that they are just and equitable for all Missourians. Let's protect our right to communicate without it being subjected to extortionate charges.

Models are offering additional free call options in other states. We would like to see it implemented across Missouri's Correctional Facilities!
