Now, the City of Benson, AZ leaders have approved an aluminum melting plant right at the end of the main downtown street and along the San Pedro River, which is the last free-flowing river in the Southwest. It is 175 miles long and flows through four AZ counties. It is rich with wildlife, including threatened and endangered species. The aluminum plant will also be approximately two miles from the local school with children ranging preschool to Grade 12. The local government approval was done without transparency, public knowledge or input. Most residents found out one week ago. This is where we need your help!
The plant will be melting and processing 300,000 tons of aluminum per year. Aluminum Dynamics has filed for a Title V federal permit regarding their toxic emissions. The aluminum dust and other pollutants are a threat to residents' health and the environment.
