Oppose Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker of the House
The Issue
To the Members of the United States House of Representatives:
We, the undersigned citizens, respectfully call upon you to oppose the election of Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Speakership is one of the most consequential positions in our government. It carries an extraordinary responsibility to represent the American people, uphold democratic principles, exercise independent judgment, and hold those in power accountable. This position must not be treated as a reward for party loyalty or political convenience. It must be entrusted to someone whose leadership reflects the principles, integrity, and accountability the American people deserve.
We believe serious questions must be addressed regarding Jeffries's political positions, relationships, and approach to congressional oversight, particularly concerning U.S. foreign policy and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Human Rights and U.S. Foreign Policy
The devastation in Gaza, including the killing of civilians, the destruction of hospitals, schools, and essential infrastructure, and the displacement of entire communities, demands meaningful accountability from our elected representatives.
Congress cannot claim to uphold human rights and international law while failing to meaningfully confront violations involving U.S. allies or examine the consequences of American military assistance and taxpayer funding.
The Speaker plays a central role in determining the legislative agenda, influencing funding priorities, and shaping congressional oversight. These responsibilities carry real consequences for human lives. We expect congressional leadership to demonstrate moral consistency, demand accountability, and place human rights above political alliances.
Jared Kushner, Political Relationships, and Conflicts of Interest
We are also concerned by Jeffries's private meeting with Jared Kushner in August 2026, particularly in light of Kushner's involvement in discussions concerning Gaza and his extensive international business interests.
Kushner has publicly discussed Gaza's coastline in terms of its potential real estate and commercial value, while also raising the prospect of relocating Palestinians during reconstruction. Such proposals raise fundamental questions about Palestinian self-determination, property rights, and whether the future of Gaza is being considered in the interests of its people or outside political and financial interests.
Additionally, Kushner's business dealings and foreign investment relationships have prompted congressional scrutiny, including inquiries by Congressman Jamie Raskin into potential conflicts of interest.
While a private meeting does not establish agreement or endorsement, the American people deserve transparency about the nature of these political relationships and the interests represented in discussions involving U.S. foreign policy and Gaza's future.
We expect the Speaker of the House to exercise independent judgment, demand transparency, and ensure that potential conflicts of interest involving individuals with access to American policymakers receive appropriate scrutiny.
Congressional Accountability and the Public Trust
The American people deserve representatives who will challenge their own party when necessary, scrutinize government policy regardless of political affiliation, and hold powerful individuals accountable regardless of their connections.
We cannot accept a standard of leadership in which human rights become negotiable, congressional oversight becomes selective, and political relationships take precedence over public responsibility.
This petition is not simply about party politics. It is about the standards we expect from those entrusted with governing our country. The Speakership must represent a commitment to democratic accountability, transparency, human dignity, and the interests of the people rather than political institutions or private interests.
Therefore, we formally petition the Members of the United States House of Representatives to:
1. Oppose the election of Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House.
2. Demand greater transparency and accountability concerning political relationships and outside influences that may affect congressional leadership and U.S. foreign policy.
3. Prioritize meaningful congressional oversight of U.S. foreign policy, military assistance, and potential violations of international law, including those involving Gaza.
4. Uphold the principle that human rights, democratic accountability, and the public interest must take precedence over political alliances and private financial interests.
The Speakership is not a party entitlement or a reward for political loyalty. It is a public trust.
We urge you to take this responsibility seriously and recognize that your decision will reflect not only the direction of the House but also the values and principles you claim to represent.
We, the undersigned, call upon you to oppose Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker of the House and demand leadership accountable to the American people and the principles of human rights, transparency, and justice.
Respectfully,
