Oppose Financing of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline

Oppose Financing of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline
The Issue
The largest lender in Africa, Standard Bank, and Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) will fund a 1,443-kilometer crude oil pipeline that will cross Tanzania and Uganda. A large number of people will be displaced and wetlands, water sources, and protected ecosystems in Tanzania and Uganda would be in jeopardy as a result of the proposed East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), which is anticipated to be the longest heated crude oil pipeline in the world. The pipeline threatens the jobs and livelihoods of tens of thousands of people and may violate the rights of the communities it travels through, including those that are resettled. Millions of people in the Lake Victoria basin rely on the lake's watershed for drinking water and food production. This is where it will pass through. This might have disastrous effects in the event of an oil leak. Moreover, it exposes significant ecosystems to the risk of oil extraction, including the Murchison Falls National Park, which is home to a variety of wildlife species, including elephants and chimpanzees.
Sign this petition to prevent banks from funding this project that could destroy habitats and communities and be detrimental to the growth of these countries.
