OPPOSE Community Housing in the middle of Hikurangi Village!

OPPOSE Community Housing in the middle of Hikurangi Village!
The issue
Hikurangi in Northland is noted as a growth node of Whangarei and as such is looking towards a future of subdivisions and new house builds.
The Hikurangi Business Association among other groups in Hikurangi have been made aware of a resource consent application lodged within Whangarei District Council where the proposal is to put in 16 community housing units on a bare block of land located in the heart of the village. The land in discussion is located at 20/22 King Street, which is in the middle of the shopping area, backs onto the local Primary School, and neighbours the Hikurangi Hotel.
The Hikurangi Business Association STRONGLY OPPOSES this site being used for compact housing units.
The Hikurangi Business Association FULLY SUPPORTS the prioritised goal as outlined in the Hikurangi Placemaking Plan 2020/2021 where the community voiced their priorities for the village moving into the future, and agreed one of the top three priorities for the village was maintaining the historic HERITAGE AND CHARACTER of the community. As a result an agreed project to occur from this was to develop a streetscape vision for this specific location (the main shopping area in the village) that promotes and revives the heritage features of the buildings and develops new/upgraded features in line with the coal mining, farming, and forestry history from the district. Multiple storey attached units in the middle of this area IS NOT in line with the agreed vision for development in this area!
Other concerns have been raised from the proposed location including parking concerns where Hikurangi is already short of car parks for the shopping area, access to amenities of which Hikurangi does not have in abundance (doctors etc), and what better purposes this land could be used for as it is a prime commercial location.
Hikurangi Business Association says NOW is the time to act to save this space from residential development! With the resource consent in council we don’t have long to have a voice as a community and oppose this development! We are not asking you to say no to community housing in Hikurangi, but to say NO to community housing ON THIS SPECIFIC SITE right in the heart of our village.
Say no to resource consent LU2300025!
