Sharing the problems at the shelter have been numerous troubling and ongoing “On September 13, there were 139 available to adopt cats on the OC Animal Care website. This is not an uncommon number to see.
On September 14, the number of available cats shrunk to under 40. That is a very unusual number to see. Today, there were 41 cats available to adopt. On the Happily Ever After Page, which tracks cats who have been adopted or sent to rescue, there are 20 for September 13 and 14th. That accounts for 61 cats.
Where are the other 78 cats?
An email was sent to Director Andi Bernardi, Assistant Director Monica Schmidt, and various Community Outreach Team members over 24 hours ago asking about the cats. Another email was sent this afternoon and Andi Bernardi's boss took the time to respond to our email today.
He stated that they would look into it. No one else responded.
We do NOT believe that these kittens were euthanized. We believe that OCAC just wants to limit how many cats adopters can see at a time. It is illegal to not list all adoptable animals who have met retention. I also have no idea why you would take away any opportunity for a homeless cat to be adopted. We cannot go back to the days where every single animal was not trackable. Are all the dogs listed? There is no reason to not list available pets, and we have to hold the OCAC Administration accountable.
It is our responsibility to do so for the animals, and for the staff who works so hard to care for these precious babies.
We have always partnered with and advocated for OCAC, but in light of recent events, we are having to pivot to advocate for the animals and staff. We have lots of information to share in the next few weeks.
We need transparency and accountability. We cannot allow OCAC to go back to the dark days. We had come so far.
