It has been some time since we updated you on our efforts to end the secret meetings, as we have waited to see the outcome of the Tribal/WDFW meetings. As we expected, the results of the NOF process, although not perfect, were much less confrontational than last year. We believe this is in large part due to the pressure you applied with your support of this petition. While the NOF meetings were not as confrontational this year, they were still behind locked doors, and the public was still left out of the process. Although the meetings went somewhat well, and there were some better opportunities, we also believe this was a calculated tactic by the Tribes to have us ease off the pressure of insisting on open and fair negotiations in all aspects of our fisheries management. The Tribes continue to exert an unfair amount of influence over the fisheries management and deals are still being done without public oversight. As WDFW leadership continues to side with the Tribes against the will of the people who pay their salaries and make excuses why they must continue to hold secret meetings. Last year, in a move that showed exactly how little the Tribes and WDFW leadership think of you, the Tribes and WDFW started the negotiations early, as The Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, Chairwoman Lorraine Loomis stated in her editorial. This was a deliberate ploy to undermine our demand for transparency and to further eliminate the public from knowing what is really going on. We believe, the same tactic will be used again this upcoming year. We continue to strongly believe that the only way we, the citizens have any hope of making a positive change to the dysfunctional and corrupt fishery management is to continually increase the pressure to have ALL the processes of the negotiations OPEN AND PUBLIC. As a result, we have made the decision to continue to leave our petition active, and are asking you to continue to support and expand our effort. This time, WE will be ahead of the curve and are going to put even more effort into ending the secret meetings that are destroying our fisheries. Thank you all for the continued support.
