Dear Newcastle City Council,
This open letter is to find out why we are not being allowed to trade on a Sunday, due to Quayside market being closed. This is detrimental to 80+ traders who survive on an income from this market. This is our living!
We need the Quayside market to be reopened.
The UK Government has maintained from the outset that transmission of the coronavirus is lowest outdoors. They maintain that visiting an outdoor market, that has implemented COVID Secure measures is the safest way for people to shop. So WHY has the Quayside market been closed down?
Local lockdown restrictions in the North East allow for people to travel to get essential goods.
You told us the reason you closed the market is due to not being able to track and trace. Traders selling food/drink to take away or any of the traders, do NOT need to take contact details of customers.
No other markets in the area have been closed including the ‘Indoor’ Grainger market which is also run by Newcastle council. May I also remind you that Quayside market is chartered so again we ask WHY has it been closed down?
This decision is NOT in line with local or government guidelines.
We feel there has been no justified explanation from the council as to why the market has been shut. We need our market open to survive. You are crippling the local economy. Businesses have already suffered greatly due to the first lock down. They won’t survive if the market isn’t reopened as a matter of urgency. Traders have spent their lives building these businesses. You have decided to close the market at the busiest time of year with no explanation.
We look forward to a change in decision.
Kind regards
Newcastle Quayside Traders
