We want to correct some false rumours that are circulating, regarding CineCycle and Martin Heath.

Here are some facts.

In March 2024, 40+ community members formed the Save CineCycle committee at Martin's request, when he was faced with possible eviction. (His lease at 401 Richmond was in jeopardy due to a series of noise complaints, fire alarms and Fire Marshall orders from previous years).  

We met weekly with Martin during 2024 and 2025 to develop a viable plan for preserving CineCycle, and we continue to work closely with him, ensuring that both CineCycle and Martin can continue at 401 Richmond. These efforts include: securing a rent-controlled apartment for Martin; supporting the continuation of Martin's studio in 401's basement; ensuring Martin's economic security (by bringing his tax returns, pensions, and benefits up to date); and securing homes for some of Martin's film collections. CFMDC stepped up to become a viable and valued caretaker of CC, working with Martin to provide economic and administrative stability while preserving CC's ethos, history and values. 

Following a community clean-up of CC supported by our SaveCC committee and 401 Richmond, CFMDC (led by Director Genne Speers and staff) upgraded the film/video projection and sound systems, the HVAC system, the washrooms, alarm systems and emergency exits. They also brought in a community tenant (Niagara Custom Lab) to share the space.  We’re all looking forward to joining Martin at his annual Nuit Blanche screening in the 401 Richmond Central Courtyard on October 3, with CFMDC hosting a special presentation by NAITA in CC.

None of this work since 2024 would have been possible without the herculean efforts of many dozens of artists, working in tandem with Martin, CFMDC and 401 Richmond (who has been a champion of CineCycle and Martin since 1994, at times supporting him with subsidized rent during Covid and other initiatives).  Together, we’ve all worked closely with Martin to ensure a viable future for CineCycle, our community's most beloved underground cinema.
